  • Aces colorspace questions

    Hi,
I've download icio v1.3 and I followed the instructions in the tutorials. I do wonder though, is there a visual indication that I can know for certain that I set the ACES color space correctly? In some test scenes I get strange color results which makes me question if I actually set the ICIO properly. I heard conflicting opinions about ACES look, some say it suppose to look more saturated and some say it should look desaturated, as if washed out.
I've added a simple test scene below. It has textures(that are need to be rebind), I forgot to add the ICIO config file though, I used 1.0.3.

    I used this https://docs.chaos.com/display/VMAX/...Workflow+Setup as a reference.

As far as I know, working in ACES is a bit hard in 3ds Max since the viewports, materials, color swatches etc. are not color managed so I avoid ACES for now. It's too complicated at the moment (or at least for me). I might give it a try if someone comes up with a simplified workflow and when Max makes it easy to use.

Ye, I found it to be complicated as well. Not sure it's even suppose to be that complicated.

Yeah I agree. Way too much hassle to set it up for large projects and scenes with lots of assets from different vendors and artists. Not touching this either, I'm going to spend too much time adapting to this with scripts and renaming tools and the likes.

I agree it looks a tad better out of the box, but to go through all the trouble to set it up, I've already finished 2 other projects in the meantime.
            A.

              Isn't the latest version 1.3?

My bad, it is 1.3. for some reason I thought it was 1.0.3

Hi I did a few tests with your scene.

According to the docs If you are using rgb textures (which you are) and working on a sRGB monitor you need to set your rendering rgb primaries to ACEScg and setup the OCIO display correction.

The result is close to sRGB workflow but not 100% the same.

As far as I understand it is best to use ACEScg workflow if you have ACEScg textures but let me gather a bit more info and I will write again.

I am using aces_1.0.3 in the upper example.

For the first part, I did those stages, which is parameter "Rendering RGB Primaries" set to ACEScg ,and I've done similar with VFB display correction. I've downloaded the scene to double check. With that being said, I'm not getting the same result as you did. What about the VrayBitmap parameters? both on textures and HDRI.
To be honest I'm not sure about the version 1.0.3, I've downloaded the latest one, it might be 1.3.
Upload the scene please so I can compare it with mine. I'm curious why I had a different result.

Thanks, I've checked his tutorial among several others, which is made me questions the results in the first place.

The main thing is that you have to set your texture's RGB primaries setting to "sRGB primaries" or rename your textures with the suffix “_srgb”

Click image for larger version Name:	3dsmax_2022-06-06_12-05-26.jpg Views:	0 Size:	9.8 KB ID:	1149945

If you leave it to Default and don't rename the textures (and enable the Auto RGB primaries checkbox) you will get a lot more red in your materials compared to sRGB.

For a simpler solution you can try this tool: https://youtu.be/ae0XcGLG2RI
No need to download and setup OCIO config.

do you mean simpler as in, more layers of options?
