  • My displacement is a bit dyslexic...

    Hi Folks;

    I spent some 4 hours trying to get this to work, apparently should be the easiest thing in the world, and I tried the forum, websites, rebuilding the scene... all in vain. I have the following displacement map:

    grayscale image, no alpha channel nor anything else but what you see, and this is what is happening with my render:

    There is only one object, no bump mapping and I tried both the default bitmap mapping and the VrayBitmapfilter, both give me the same result, also tried cropping the bitmap and mapping different objeccts with the same displacement and, last, I tried checking the "use material displacement" box under 3D Displacement option, same, same same... I'm using Viz 2005.

    Thanks for wahtever help.

    You might want to attach the scene (or a small portion thereof) so people can dissect it.

      Hi Aneurisma,

      I've try your map on a single plane and everything work perfectly.

      Your problem must came from your object. Check your UVW's

        Check for duplicate objects, or duplicate faces in the object. Or, perhaps the back side of the object is displacing enough to punch through the front side.

          Hey, guys;

          Thanks for the replies. This is a test for an actual engraved plaque and all the dimensions should work fine. I have a 1/8" thick plaque with a 1/32" engraving which should never punch the back side. In this model I was actually embossing just to test but it didn't work out well anyways.

          There goes the file:

          Thanks a lot!

            Hi Aneurisma..

            There's a lot of mistakes in this file ... start from scratch.. For starters you havent got vray displace on ? .
            You have a lot of Unnecessary Mesh selects when you only need to use the edit mesh you firstly had on the mesh.
            You also have raytrace mats in your scene, i know your not using them, but they are big NO NO ..

            Start the scene again..

            1:create your mesh.
            2:edit mesh modifier.
            3:select the top face poly with edit mesh enabled.
            4:add a UVW map.
            5:add your vray displacemet mod
            6:select the map your using and drag it onto the vray displacement mod.
            7:have the displacement set to 2D.
            8:Turn on vray displacement in the system rollout !!

            And thats pretty much it.

              Hi natty;

              Thanks a lot for taking the time. Just some things, as I want to understand what's wrong instead of starting the whole modeling again (because that's not always gonna be possible for time reasons).

              1. Could you actually reproduce the errors I've got in my render?
              2. When you say, "turn the displacement on in the Vray Rollout", you mean the Global Switches or the Default displacement? Because the global switch is on, and I don't think I need to override the Max's displacement, since I'm using Vray's Displacement, not Max's. And also it renders with the same problem either way.
              3. I tried 2D Mapping before and when rendering a small output, it gave me 4000 warnings (invalid surface normal) but finished rendering. When I tried to output a print size render, it crashed almost instantaneously. Also, it doesn't care if I use mesh select or the same edit mesh to select the faces where I want displacement: it is giving me displacement in all faces.

              Thanks a lot

              PS: I just followed your instructions and, besides the 18000 warnings, this is what I got, which solved part of it but still doesn't quite get there...

                I know how you feel. I haven't been able to get displacement to work on my machine in quite some time. A flat plane, no problem. A box, forget it.

                I tried with your example, no luck here either. I tried natty's suggestions and still no luck.

                If you find the problem, please post your results.

                  Check this file... Just apply UnwrapUV and take a look at the layout.
