  • Upgrade question

I would like to upgrade to the latest build, at work. When I did this at home I was down for a couple of days because I had to get a new auth code, or whatever. I can not afford to be down for a couple of days at work, for obvious reasons, so I am still using 1.09.

Also, apparently, there are differences between identical scenes being opened in different versions. Again something I cannot afford to trouble shoot.

Please advise as to my best course to upgrade, or not. Thanks. Peter.

Best option for you may be to copy your max installatin, then you can install and authorize 1.47 on one while still using 1.09 on the other. Then start any new jobs in 1.47 and keep the old ones in 1.09. This also will allow you to try the 1.09 scenes in 1.47 without any risk as long as you don't save over them.

I'm not sure I understand? Copy meaning have another version of Max on the same HD, different location obviously?? Will it not automatically copy over existing program, or at the very least Vray licence may copy over common files and render my 1.09 useless?? Please elaborate a bit.

      Thanks.

It is very hard to believe that Vray people expect us to be down a couple of days to upgrade software?? Especially being that it is Autodesk now.

      Regards Peter.

You just copy the whole folder and adjust the plugin.ini for the new paths.

Another option is to just install the license server start it, get the request code, send it in and wait for the new auth code. You can do that while still using 1.09

Actually you don't even have to do that. All you will need to do is install the license server on some computer and start it up, it will give you a request code. Email that into chaos and when you get the response plug that in and you are done. THEN you can install the 1.47.whatever and and point to the computer with the license server. That is what I did when i helped my busy upgrade their office. They were down for 5 mins I think while I installed Vray on all the computers.

The other thing I did was add the Vray license server program to the startup folder to make sure it is running all the time.

So how do yo install the license server without installing the whole upgrade? Seeing as the download is an exucutable file as the current build. Is there somewhere that I can just download the license server?

Also if this is a standalone machine can I just instal the run the licence server on that machine to e-mail the required info to Chaos without affecting the current install?? I guess RErender said I could do that but just wanted to be sure, without screwing up my current 1.09

ALSO I'M USING MAX 6 NEW BUILD FOR VIZ2005 - COULD BE IMPORTANT??

            Thanks for the tips.

            Regards Peter.

hmmm easiest way to get the licence server up and running to just get the auth info. Would be to make a dummy max directory, call it 3dsmaxtemp or something and put a copy of the 3dsmax.exe file in there. That way you will be able to install vray into that folder without affect your proper version. Then copy the vrlserver back to your proper max directy and run it. Then you can send the request codes off and await your auth info. Then just enter that into the vrlserver, then reinstall vray properly into the proper max directory and everything should be sweet.
