  • Purpose of sharpen AND blur in VFB?

    Hi,

I wonder how the sharpen and blur layer in VFB works. As in, I'm not sure why I would sharpen AND blur at the same time, seems a bit contradictory, or am I missing something?

Is there something special going on with blur that helps the overall image? I understand what sharpen does, but isn't it weird to blur as well?

For VFX you almost always have to blur CGI elements a bit to make them look real.

Real lenses are rarely razor sharp. Most debayering algorithms in modern cameras have a bit of sharpening built in. So it is very common to do a hint of blur followed by a hint of sharpening, sometimes in multiple passes.

It’s nice to have in the VFB so you can make it look better when doing a quick comp over a background plate during the development stage, even though the final effects would be done in a compositing application.

Thank you for the explanation. I always thought depth of field and motion blur were the things making up the blur, so on top of that another layer of blur is added?

Mind you that using Blur/Sharpen only has an effect on the RGB. Not on the render elements, nor alpha or masks. Which makes it useless for us.

Yeah, it's really for preview only-- at least here.

Almost always. It depends on the source footage/lenses, etc.

Isn't the blur an overall effect? Does it change depending on the distance?

It is an overall effect, it does not depend on distance.
