Scaling lights

If you scale a light, does it just spread the same amount of lighting power over a larger area?

I've got some rectangular lights that I've scaled in one axis in order to match their respective light fittings, some by quite a lot! I'm now thinking it might be more physically realistic to use a few along the length of some of the larger ones.

Scaling is equivalent to changing the dimensions of the light.
