  • Thin a Model

I have a model which is basically trusswork. Each member of the truss is unfortunately made up up an extruded rectangle (think lots of 2x4 wooden pieces). The model is from another program, and has no history and is not paramteric.

I would like to make all the trusswork thinner. To keep up the wood analogy I would like to make the pieces 1x1s rather than 2x4s, but even 1x2s would be better.

I tried a Push modifier and it only goes so far before ruining it.

I tried TyPush which can go a tiny bit more before it begins to reverse and make it bigger, but I would still like it thinner.

Any other thoughts on achieving this without re-modeling?

    Thank in advance.

Hi can you share a screen grab? If it is not too complex I would try to shell it with selected inner/outer faces and after that convert to poly and delete what I don't need.

Thanks for the suggestions. The shell trick is neat. I was able to get the original modeller to thin it up a bit in his software. Then I was able to thin it up more. (I had initially asked for splines so I could easily change this and was told it wasn't possible in Maya.. Not sure if that is true-- I doubt it).

      Anyway, good for now, thanks.
