  • General Toon questions

    Hi,

I've only just been getting into VRaytoon and have a few questions with regards to using it with render elements (I know it's flagged as a 'simple effect', but seems pretty capable to me)

    1. Is there any way to split different toon effects into separate passes?

Say I'm using include/exclude lists to separate out line styles on different effects - I can't see a way to pass that info onto the render element (I can add a second Toon render element, but it's still outputting both effects)

(I also wonder if object IDs would be a better way of handling multiple toon effects

    2. Also is there any reason the render element is mono - no way to get the colour info if it's in the scene (the outline doesn't take into account other lighting etc, so doesn't seem to be reason why it should be mono?)

    3. It's being passed to a colleague who is new to 3DS Max, so trying to keep it simple - they're rendering out a pass without the outline and the toon line to work over in photoshop

At the moment they're just turning off the toon effect, but not sure if there's a render element which will output everything bar the toon effect

    Thanks,

    Steve

Id add to this and say it would be great if Toon also is effected by the VrayClipper. I noticed today that the toon is there for geo thats being clipped. Maybe a nice effect, so could be an option on/off.

I agree this would be helpful for some of the view I create. I use the clipper to show the inside of an aircraft. It would be useful for the technical marketing people to have a toon version of that same view

Thank you for the feedback. Sorry to say, there isn't a way to separate toon effects at this point (except rendering separate passes for each effect). The output is mono because it's designed to be used as a mask. Yes, there doesn't seem to be a way to draw the outlines in the VRayToonRE only. I've logged all three suggestions as an improvement request (internal bug-tracker id: VMAX-12768 ).
