  • urban tree situation

    Good morning

I was wondering if any of you guys have experience with urban tree planting in archviz. In many of my jobs, a certain type of tree is requested and I'm having a really hard time finding an appropiate model in 3d libraries. The chaos cosmos browser also doesn't make me too happy. I'm also having a hard time translating the tree into english, the german name is "Platane" which translates to "planetree" I guess but I've also read the term "sycamore".
What I want to achieve is something like this (attachment)

These trees have a relatively clean and straight trunk and the branches begin above peoples heads. The trunks are slim-ish, but the branches spread out wide, touching the next tree and forming a natural roof over peoples heads, providing shade and cozyness. Also the leaves are very translucent.
    I'd really appreciate your help!

I think that's a London Plane Tree or as you say an American Sycamore.

    Some available to purchase:
    https://globeplants.com/products/pla...3043ce0a&_ss=r
    https://maxtree.org/products/plant-models-vol-106/

Maxtree had some more models that were good, but they had some licensing issue and no longer sell them unforunately.
The old packs that contained them were Maxtree 12 and Maxtree 35. However the numbering system is totally confused with them now so make sure you check carefully if you think you've found an old pack before purchasing anything.

Maxtree is absolute chaos with beautiful renderings of various vegetation, but it looks very produced. I fear that their plants might look completely different in another scene.
I have downloaded some yvi from globeplants which looks beautiful, so globeplants might be the way to go. The plane tree you have posted looks too skeletal to me. The leaves are too small and the trunk seems funny, maybe the tree is just too big.

But you gave me a nudge in the right direction, so I thank you for that. I have found a myriad of potential trees over turbosquid under the term london plane tree. Just need to find the perfect one. I will happily post my findings, should I succeed.

I find globe plants materials can be great, or terrible, but keep in mind you can purchase the GrowFX files if you have a license and then modify the tree to suit your needs. It's a lot more work, but then you have the oppotunity to have exactly what you want, and an infinite amount of free variations.

Another option is Speedtree, which I really like. It's not that hard to learn and again you can seed variations
and get it to look exactly how you want. Another plus for this is that you can get a month's sub for $19.

Hi, thank you all for the hints. Speedtree looks promising, maybe I will look into that.

For now, I decided to buy a few models from this one artist on turbosquid. I spent about 80$ on these and they seem very convincing.

Unfortunately the trees are only sold in fbx and 3ds max corona, so I had to manually alter the multiMat that came with the fbx and the material IDs were still there, lucky. It took some time, but it was fun.
Maybe I overdid it with the 2sided materials and the DOF because this baby took 17 hours to render, which would be way too much if this was a project where I would have to react fast. But it was merely an experiment for future projects to come, so rendertime didn't really matter.
I think these trees are kind of what I'm looking for. They have incredibly detailed trunks, their leaves don't look too static and there's a lot of variety with the branches.
