  • Use 2023 Array modifier with Vray Lights

Hi, would it be possible for vraylights to support the array modifier? Right now it doesn't do anything with it on top. Or is it a feature that Autodesk must implement?

    Thank you

Hi thanks for posting. Please share your full 3ds Max version and V-Ray version? I can't find this modifier on my 3ds Max 2023.

Hi, The new Array function works as a modifier above the main geometry. So it's made to work with geometry. Max's standard light does not work as well with the Array. If you want to distribute lights along a spline for instance you could try Chaos Scatter or Path Constraint.

You can also distribute planes (for plane lights) or lowres-spheres (for spherical lights) or whatever geometry with the array modifier and then use this as source mesh for VRayMeshLight. So when you now modify your array, your mesh light changes procedurally. Another way, but destructive, is to use the extract instances option from array and replace the created objetcs with your lights, using an instancer script like this http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/instancer-0 .

I used to do it the way above, but now that Railclone and ForestPack support lights it's better to do it this way.
