  • NeRF!

Looks like something with massive future potential:
    (fun video too)

    https://youtu.be/YX5AoaWrowY

Seems that a way to import the radiance field into vray as an environment, with viewport representation (mesh?) would be very useful.. Maybe not right now, but soon..

Ideally with some inbuilt shadow catching/matte tech..

Id imagine they could also be used to illuminate the scene?

Please tell me this is on chaos's radar..?

As is becoming worryingly common (see ai generated textures, planetary atmospheres etc). Blender has already got something, leaving vray/max/maya looking old..

    https://github.com/maximeraafat/BlenderNeRF

Although this seems to be a way to convert standard 3d scenes to nerf radiance fields for real-time rendering..

Cool! But not quite what I was suggesting.. Having said that, probably even more relevant to chaos if it can crank out a clean render at 60 fps..

Blender has already got something, leaving vray/max/maya looking old.
It's a great tech, but we are also aware of the inherent, currently unavoidable, limitations.
As a commercial product, we have an obligation toward production performance Blender doesn't.

Indeed, NeRFs are REALLY interesting, and I understand not getting into this too ealy for commercial products, but too late could also be a problem.
If there`s an experimental pre-alpha release for NeRFs at some date, please sign me up, I'll promise in-depth feedback

It's a fast moving world, and Blender surely has an advantage with open source projects: just noticed these release highlights with the latest nerfstudio version:
          • Blender VFX add-on
          • Scene cropping
          • Basic RealityCapture Support
          • Improved camera path management
          • Bug fixes

There've been a few ads done using this tech already, the latest I think is a McDonalds one, plus a couple of cars, so it's definitely in production and looking good

Bart, i referred to being able to do something else than display the captured field.
That's clearly doable now, it's the tracing GI off it and such that becomes quite a bit more complicated.
In any case, we are actively researching this topic.

Oh yeah sure, I realise that; I was just updating as I noticed the ad yesterday in some post elsewhere

And updating VRay for Blender too!

Blender has matured so much, it makes Max and Maya look like a joke in terms of the UI. Just needs a renderer that is rock solid for production... Hopefully that is VRay before Cycles surpasses everything...
