  • Vray FastSSS2 material - for hair

I'm trying out using FastSSS2 masterial for hair materials on a crowd I'm putting in my archviz project.

I liked the effect in isolation, but in the scene with lots of light sources it's always the slowest thing to render and I think will provide a significant uplift in my render-time.

are there any of the parameters I should be looking at for optimization, or another material entirely that will give a more naunced effect for hair.

None of the characters will be seen particularly close up, matybe I should just revert to VrayMtl.

Edit: the hair is just geo planes, created in character creator, not Vray hair or anything like that.

    Hi, thanks for posting.
However you adjust a SSS material it will not be as fast as a regular material. Could you share your previews and more details of the project?

You mean they have mapped opacity?

Yes that's correct. I reverted to standard VrayMtl for now, I don't think the results are worlds apart in retrospect. Maybe if there's a way to limit sub-surface light bounces the FastSSS2 might be worth using.
