  • some DR tips

Since I see many posts about DR issues, I recently made some interesting discoveries about how DR behaves in its current state and desided to share. Im sorry if these are known things, but I found they were quite inetersting.

    DR rendering:

When rendering with dr, cancelling in mid render will cause random halts on machines. I found that by pressing esc it works better for cancalation then by clicking cancel button in render menu. (seems kind of strange since its same thing)
When render has finished, do not launch an emmidiet render right after as dr nodes need some time to reload and prepare for next scene.
If you keep these two things in mind, working with dr could be pretty good.

    Now for errors:

1 - DR node vrayspawner is running and vray dummy is inplace, my host machine sees it, it can be resolved. But when I send render the DR node just doesnt want to accept the job. Vray log says render node failed.
Restarting dr doesnt help, rebooting box doesnt help.
    Solution:
Close vrayspawner, close vraydummy.max if its running, go into \3dsmax7\ root and find a file called vraydummy60.xml and delete it.
run vrayspawner it will fail to start. It is important to do this because if you dont run it without vraydummy60.xml and just simply copy a new one over it will not work. Then copy new vraydummy60.xml from your 3dsmax7 folder (local) drive. Start vray spawner wait for vraydummy.max to load and it works.

2 - DR node renders old scene, and not the one Im sending to it. I know this has been answered before, but now I can clarify why it happenes. In 2 of my cases this occured when rendering and isolated model in persp view with DR. The DR node recieves a scene renders it but then some instance of max or part of it keeps referencing to currecnt vraydummy.max scene (your dr scene) and does not allow for rewrite of the new scene.
Solution: Restart dr node (reset) you need a clean boot so that all memory refrences are gone. Go to 3dsmax7\network and delete vraydummy.max, then new scene should be created when you send the next scene to dr.

    Some other notes:
DR does not currently support pixel aspect different from 1.0
DR does not currently support region renderings.
When using glu3d on dr nodes surafaces become offset from its original position.

      very useful
you should add that DR does not support xrefs in a scene
      it renders blank buckets
thats a major problem as far as i m aware since when doing extremely complex projects wich involve other people it s impossible to work without xrefs

Alkis : DR Does support xrefs
make sure all the paths are accesible by all machines.

Here is a crucial tip to get DR working and that is to turn off increment on save in MAX.

Look at this post for further info.
