ok this is driving me a bit nuts frankly.... actually getting a reasonable result with the new sss settings on the vraymaterial... faster than sss2 as well.

until i turn on my extra lights, from which the clouds are excluded... if the material has no sss, it works as expected, excluded from those lights. any level of sss added, and the clouds are now illuminated by the excluded lights... just like when i use scattervolume. . grrrr.. when i do stuff like this i seem to find weird behaviour or showstopping issues at every turn.

i shall register it as a bug.

any fix will obviously be too late for my project though.

          I meant speed-wise.
If it's not textured, then optimisations can be had, and 100 bounces is much more manageable.
The moment this turns into raymarching (i.e. textured), then bounces have a much more severe impact on render speed.

Have you seen this? Maybe you can get a decent effect without going bonkers with bounces.

Merely so you can send the scene over.

the scene is over 18 gb in size.... i assume that the issue with the light exclusions could be tested with a sphere and 2 lights..

                You excluded via light lists?
                That works for me.

As you please: the offer to upload stuff is valid (18GB won't itch us a bit, trust me. :P ).

I see. Yes, the bounces often seems to bring things to a crawl. The god rays tutorial is straightforward. That sort of small scale thing usually works decently.

It's more like a broad landscape where you would likely need those bounces that has never worked well. Also, the fog attenuates the lighting so much. VolumeGrids just seem to work faster and easier with probablistic shading, but it all depends on the shot, and what you are trying to achieve.
