  • VRayFur conversion mm to cm

    Hi!

    I've got some third party rug models which are modelled in milimeters and use VRayFur. At our studio we all work in centimeters. So when we merge these rugs the VRayFur doesn't show up as intended.
    Our process has been like this:

    We merge the rug model in 3DsMax (which is set to system and display units = cm). If a rug model was modelled in mm, for example 2000x1500mm it will show up correct dimensions as 200x150cm.
    Only thing is, the VRayFur does not scale well like this. If I open it in 3DsMax set to mm it shows up just fine. My question is, how do I merge it in a centimeter set up?

    Chaos would probably have to rewrite this to be able to work as we'd expect. Maybe there's some Max reason why it can't be made to work though..
    Specifically it seems it messes up the thickness and the gravity on merge, whilst correctly converting the length.

    So, I reckon that the method with the fewest clicks to get it to work properly is by opening the original scene, resetting the units to cms
    and then the only parameter that needs changing is the length it seems. Then you can save it and merge into other cm scenes.

      Just my two cents but Max has the worst units implementation and conversion ever. I started working in meters for bigger projects, but I started realizing that all the problems I had (viewport, precision,...) aren't solved, and all the procedural units are gone to shit too.

      Sometimes even units from maps like dirtmap, distancetex, edgestex, and whatnot aren't converted correctly either. Units in options like weld are all of a sudden 100 times bigger too. Doesn't make any sense. It's a shit show really.

        I do not understand the issue. Could you illustrate it (screencaps, video)? Sending a simple scene would be helpful.

          Hi all,

          Thanks for the replies!

          fixeighted, I don't know why it has not worked earlier, but your steps work now!
          In addition, after converting to the desired units the model needs to be scaled to fit the units. After that just adjust the length and thickness according the scale conversion and save the model.

          hermit.crab I think the only thing that needs to be fixed is automatically adjusting the length and thickness parameters in the VRayFur rollout when converting model units.

          I've attached a model of a rug, modelled in mm. You can use it to replicate the problem.

          1. Reset 3dsmax and set the system and display units to mm;
          2. Load the rug
          3. Check the size, it should be around 2180mm long and 2510mm wide.
          4. Make a test render, it should look fine now;
          5. To load this correctly in a cm file it needs to be converted to cm (because of the VRayFur)
          6. Set the 3DsMax files system and display units to cm
          7. Check the size, it is now around 2180 x 2510 cm;
          8. Scale down the object by factor 10;
          9. Make another render, the size of the VRayFur and thickness has not been scaled down.
          10. Fixeighteds solution works here, adjust the length and thickness in the VRayFur rollout. It would be nice if this could work automatically.

            When changing the display units, Max correctly converts the mm to cm. The size after the change is 218 x 251 cm. The issue is coming from the manual scaling, which is not necessary.
