  • Upgrading 3ds max?

    Hi,

In 2019, I stopped buying annual 3ds max upgrades. So my last version is 2020. Last week I upgraded my pc with a new RTX 4090. I would like to know if there is any advantage in rendering speed by upgrading to 3ds max 2023? I just made the switch to GPU rendering. My current vray version is 6.1.

Rendering? Not a lot. Viewport speed, some. It depends on what you are dealing with. Certainly alembic and skin performance is faster. The retopolgy tools are nice (not sure if you can get those for 2020, you could for 2021). 2023 definitely feels a little snappier than 2021 did. But it is still Max, and needs a complete re-write.

I was taught that if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. So, I'll leave others to answer your question . How's the 4090?

Nah Bobby, it's ok to rant a little about Max...it's part of the subscription privileges I reckon

Yeah, that's what you're paying for, not the bloated, antique, unoptimized code that, rather than being improved, gets a fresh set of icons for somewhere around $1k every year.

Luckily I get the to use the indie version. If I had to pay the full cost I'd be furious.
I'm too old to switch now anyway, so I'm stuck with whatever tiny morsels (some of which are actually very good) AD cares to sprinkle.

Now I just save annoyance for the fact that I pay 700+ quid for Vray premium, 4/5 of which I have no use for

With 2023, loading and saving of files has been improved significantly. Things are faster now.

Except if you're facing the issue I, and some others, are facing. Which means if you have two max instances open and one is doing a file operation, your entire workstation comes to an agonizing crawl. The improvements are moot in my case.

The RTX 4090 is a joy to work with. My previous videocard was a 1080ti. I was waiting for the Nvidia fe batch, but I gave up so I bought a suprim x.

Thanks, Joelaff! Those retopoly tools and new modeling features would definitely come in handy. Has the UI been improved for 4K screens?

Oh, yes. It is better with 4k screens. Even 2021 wasn’t terrible there, but 2023 is even better. Still not perfect if you have multiple monitors of multiple resolutions, but much better.

As much as I like to poke fun, 2023 was a nice improvement in productivity over 2021. Although we have maintenance we were too busy to ever switch to 2022, and before becoming free, the Thinkbox tools took forever to get updated.

I hear that it is fast. I was thinking to plop one in an external box, but I read that older cheaper cards will run faster.

If possible, could you share your hardware configuration?
I'd like to build a new rig hoping prices will go down a little bit (probably I'm dreaming... )...so I'm trying to collect some configs

My machine is already 2 years old. The specs are in my signature. The new Ryzen 7950X has some major improvements over my old 5950X.
After many years of using pre-build pc's (Dell, HP and Custom pc builders) I decided to make my own pc. For me, it is a pleasure to unpack all those beautiful parts and turn them into a working machine.

                              Oh...I've missed it.
                              Some questions:
                              - motherboard?
                              - ram
                              - what cooling system? liquid or air?
