  • /city model //crashes

I am working with a large city model 5.1 milion polys obviously spread over a huge area.

It has no more than five simple vray materials, no textures.

The problem i`m having is max crashes when loading the geometry for rendering.

Have any of you worked on something big like a city and experienced the same problems?

Is it because of the big area the model spreads that causes the crash. because theoretically the number of polygons shouldn`t be a problem as i have seen bigger scenes render with vray with no problems which are more compact than a city. Would the scene origin effect vray when it comes to rendering?

Any suggestions will. be highly appreciated.

    Version of vray: 1.09.03n
PC Spec: Dual 3 ghz Xeon HT, 2gbs ram.

First off... Vray Proxy would generally be a solution, but what else are you doing in your scene? Images size? GI method? Anim? Still?

It is not a case of image size, GI settings, or the like, this much has been tested. When vray builds the SD tree max crashes, and falls back to the desktop.

I tried turning down the max tree depth parameter, and on PAL, i got it to work at 5. But, now the rendering is taking a whole lot longer with this new model compared to a previous less complex model, without GI etc. Any tips for speeding up render times, without me having to remove scene geometry?

are you using instances? set the default geometry to dynamic in vray system parameters?
Also the type of AA matters, I think adaptive uses less mem when you have a lot of detail geometry.

Cheers. Setup the 3GB switch, seems to work ok well now.

Glad to hear it's working - but did you try making it a Vray proxy as Cpnichols mentioned?

                    "Version of vray: 1.09.03n "

Thats one of the big problems you have

Just update to a newer version. Then you will have the option to change the memory management from "static" to "dynamic".

as far as I remember this is already an option in .09.03n
but ur right, i do not see any reason why not to upgrade.

not during a project.. Especially when he already saved his scene in 1.09 !!
I have big rendertimes problems with an old 1.09 project that needs to be rerendered.. now that we finally switched to 1.46. ...

we have a sydney cbd model and outer terrain of the full sydney metro area. i havent had any problems with our model.

i have made sure the model is set close to 0,0 and not set to a suveyors coordinate sytem as ive found this can cause some issues in max. i also have my units set to metres not mm.

                            Cheers

Is it full detail or are the buildings pretty basic?
                              How was it made?

                              Sorry for all the questions
