  • Vray Proxy Workflow

    Hi all,

    We are looking into a new workflow utilizing VRayProxy's and I wanted to ask a few questions to gain a better understanding of what is / isn't possible.
    1. Is it possible to utilize VRay Object Properties and / or standard Object Properties (Visible to Camera, etc) with objects or sets of objects inside a VRayProxy?
    2. Are Material Overrides set by material name or is in an order list? For example, if MaterialX has an override to pickup MaterialY from the scene and the Proxy is re-exported with a change to the material order, will the override still be set to MaterialX? I ask because from memory, this did catch me out on a project 10 years ago so Im wondering if anything has changed.
    3. Is it at all possible to use VRayProxies in conjunction with Cryptomatte to get node name mats?
    That is all for now, any help would be appreciated.

    1. Yes, both should work fine. Note that changing properties in the V-Ray properties would affect the whole VRayProxy. To control it for each object or object group, you should use the VRayMtlWrapper. Shaders and visibility may be overridden through the object hierarchy options.
    2. Both options are available. You may either override by group (I presume this is what you mean by order) or the shader name (through a wildcard, i.e. *VRayMtl1*). In your case, it sounds safer to use shader names.

      Thanks for the reply.

      On point 3, upon testing, we don't seem able to get all the node mattes from Cryptomatte, the proxy displays as one node. Are we doing something incorrectly?

        When exporting, there's an option to create a multi-material. Check it. This can be done manually as well.
