I tried the default 400MB and then upped it to 800MB.
I am doing quite a few tests now and watching the RAM useage for the 3dsmax.exe process. I can't seem to see it going above 560MB regardless of what I try. Even using some of my previous settings - static, different Hsph sub settings, different Max.tre. depth, face/level coef, Max.depth for reflections values.

I just can't seem to push the RAM useage over this 560MB value. Doesn't this mean it isn't a memory problem?

    I am really confused now.
    Kind Regards,

Come on guys... this is our old buddy 2gb limit.

Sorry tricky. It is a real pain in the ass.

For some reason 1.47 uses a lot more memory than before.

Search these forums for other topics about the 3gb switch.

meanadam - 3GB switch makes no difference. I thought I mentioned that in my first post

If only it was so simple.
        Kind Regards,

bounding box is too large...thats the source of your trouble. Xref the scene thru scene xref parent it to a dummy and scale it down by 90% this will fix your exeptions....worked for me :P

Did this work for anyone else(tricky?)? I'm having problems with a scene that I'm trying to render large. Switching off displacement fixes the problem, but is not an acceptable solution! I've tried the usual dynamic ram, adjusting system properties, but the problem remains.

Did you find a solution to the problem tricky?

              Tricky,
I had a scene with the exact same symptoms, but I reached 138Mills poly.

Nevertheless, I did try lots of things, including proxy everthing, DR, BB, adding RAM to my farm, reducing my maps, etc. But the thing would not render, "unexpected exception"...

At the end, it was actually pretty simple: I turned dynamic memory on (I think the default 400Mb or at most 500Mb), AND I turned on Bitmap PAGER.

The latter, I could not understand the settings untill I found an article on the MAX knowledge base. I suggest you do some research to find those settings.

Finally, I setup 20 strips in BB (4000px x 2600 total rendering), and has been working ever since. Watch for the strips overlapping, since small overlapping could cause lines going accross the rendering.

              Hope this helps,

              regards

heh old thread... same old problems

I just wondered if the problem was with the scene bounding box or, as in my case, it was down to overly large bitmaps.

Basically, I was struggling with the displacement slowdowns that crippled my productivity on a recent job. After reducing the resolution of my displacements I managed to speed things up.
