  • VFB Workflow Questions/Clarifications

In shifting from Photoshop post-production, to a 100% VFB Back to Beauty workflow, I have some questions that I need to understand better.

    1) If I save a Composite preset, does it contain any changes that I had made in LightMix? In other words, do I need to apply my LightMix preset each time, prior to applying the Composite preset before exporting to .exr?
    2) Are settings that are made in VFB LightMix / Composite "sticky"? For example, if I open a new scene, do the previous settings used become the default for the new scene?
    3) When I apply certain corrections, such as Lens Effects and Sharpen/Blur, I can see those effects visually, but on the .exr, they are not present. Why is this? Shouldn't they be part of the export, just like the Composite is?

    Thanks in advance!

    HI, thanks for posting.

1 - You can convert your LightMix to Composite and after that it will be in the VFB layer tree pre-set file.

2 - The settings made in VFB on LIghtMic and Composite are not "stiky", they will reset for each new clean scene.

3 - If you enable the "create effects result channel" you will have a collapsed image with all effects and corrections

      vladimir_krastev Thank you!

One thing I noticed when converting LightMix to Composite is that you can not have both layers on at the same time (it's VERY blown out). That's why I was thinking that the Composite contains all of the LightMix settings already. Is that not true?

        Another question:
If you have a scene that is rendering and you make changes to VFB (LightMix or Composite) while it's rendering, will those changes be saved when the render completes?

I can confirm that nothing above the Composite layer is working in the final .exr Export... I can see it in VFB, but not in the EXR

So the EffectsResult Channel doesn't look like it should?

I'm not sure where I find that. Everything looks great in the VFB, but when I open the EXR in Photoshop, none of those effects are there. For instance, I can crank the Sharpen all the way up so it looks horrible, but then in the EXR file, it looks like I didn't do anything. Same with light flare. Nothing. Maybe I'm exporting wrong? I'm using "Save all image channels to a single file" for the EXR. Then from there, generate a TIF and JPG in Photoshop.

The save option you use is meant for later back-to-beauty, so it would save anything that sits in its own channel (f.e. a glare, or denoise), but will skip anything that's not (f.e. CCs, sharpen, etc.).
It's very similar to saving raw, in that it uses our own EXR saver.

If you mean to save the *edited* beauty out, use any of the other option (save current channel, f.e.) and save as you please (exr or png makes no difference.). Notice these options use the Max EXR saver (you can tell from the UI).
