I have been trying to get this material to work for some time but I am not getting the result I would like. If anyone has any tips what I should be focusing on would help a lot

I would use a translucent shader for the base and a dark volume with procedural noise3D Scenes, Shaders and Courses for V-ray and Corona

Here is a quick test, is done on Vray for Cinema4D but you can do 100% the same in Vray for Max.
Base geometry with translucent shader:
Environment Fog with volumetric noise shader:
Combined:
