  • Dirt

I have been trying to make a good dirt material for a long time, but nothing I could use. I want dirt streaks, just where you would expect to see dirt. I am working on a stucco house, and I want a subtle streak under my window ledges. Any tips? I watched many videos, but nothing really applicable to a real-world conditions; just boxes on boxes as examples.

Hi, thanks for posting. Here is the docs pages about VRayDirt. I made a test scene for you as well. The most challenging part in my opinion is the bias parameters. You need to set it up with testing for your specific application.

This is a real-world size window and skirt.
    Please find attached the scene.

The problem with the dirt thing as a procedural is that it just doesn't look great out of the box, imo.
It is what it is and you'd need to mix it up to be workable I think.

For your things Bobby, why not just have a set of decals that you can apply where needed?
        They will probably look better....

I have done that on a few peojects and it worked well. I saw it as a workaround, but maybe it is a better way, like you said.

If the problem is limiting the dirt to only appear beneath the window ledges, try using the z bias to make the dirt go downwards, and then perhaps use a vray distance tex set to target your window geometry as a mask so that you control a bit better where the dirt goes. If you only want the dirt on vertical surfaces, you can use a triplanar map with different colors on the axis so that it does not dirty up horisontal surfaces (as in black and white if the black is dirt and set to multiply for example, you would set the z axis to white so that no dirt appears there). Also i would check out a youtube video by jonas noell on how to create a procedural concrete material, where he has some tricks with using vray colors with different multipliers/rgb output in the vraydirt to make the dirt more apparent.

Sounds way overly complicated. I had a script that did all this with one click, but the script is no longer around.

$249.00 is not realisitc, at least not for me. I think I paid under $50 when I originally purchased it.

Yeah, I paid $49 to upgrade to 2019, and the same thing to upgrade to 2020. It is a subscription if you need to upgrade every year.
