  • .mat vs .vrmat

I've been away from 3ds max for quite awhile and I'm trying to get things going again. Can someone clear my head on the difference between .mat materials and .vrmat.
I created a material in 3ds max using a vray bitmap for diffuse and a vray normal map for the bump slot. When I save the file, it saves as a .mat file?
So when I go to bring it in to use on a project, it doesn't show up in the directory because apparently it needs to be a .vrmat material.
What's the difference and how do I change it?
    Thank You

    Hi, thanks for posting.
.mat is the 3ds Max's format for materials while .vrmat is V-Ray's format for exporting/importing materials.

So when I go to bring it in to use on a project, it doesn't show up in the directory because apparently it needs to be a .vrmat material.
Could you explain your workflow in a bit more details? For .vrmat we have the .vrmat exporter that lives in the V-Ray Menu and for .mat there is the 3ds Max's material library.

I created a vray material in 3ds max. Then I did a vrmat export. I went into revit vray asset Editor and appearance manager. I imported to .vrmat material into the asset editor and applied it as an override to a revit material. And the original material did not change in the view.
      What am I missing?

Hi, was your issue resolved? I see you have opened another thread in the V-Ray for Revit section. Do you need any further assistance?

No Vladimir. I still have not been able to get the vray material I created in 3ds max to show up in Revit. I did a vrmat export in max brought it into revit and tried to use it as an override for a revit material and it's not showing up.
I assigned a wood plank flooring to the exterior siding of this building and tried to use my material as an override. No luck. I've attached an image with the kind of siding I am trying to create and a screenshot of the material assignment in Revit.

I see. This all sounds more like a job for the Revit support team to be honest. Please continue in the other thread as well.
Have you been able to get this workflow working for you previously or this is your first attempt?
If you are not sure how the export/import works you could test it with a simple material first and take it from there.
Also I see one of our Revit specialists has responded in the other thread. Please make sure you follow her advice as well.

I just recently installed vray for revit so this is my first attempt.
