  • Vray material library - Network rendering

    Hi
I have one main workstation with 2 rendering machines that I render to using backburner.
I have just this morning updated to the latest version of vray and for some reason any material library textures dont render when submitted to backburner.
I have found a couple of other threads on this forum with the same issue and none seem to have been resolved.

I have changed the location of the library by installing it onto my server, and have then changed the path in the registry on my main workstation and my rendering pcs, ive also added a user path, but still the network pcs wont find the materials from the vray library.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling vray but don't get any option in the "advanced" tab to select where I want the Vray material library to be stored, ie on my server.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

If you run the renderer as different user names from your workstation accounts then it won't find the textures. As I have said many times Chaos really needs to put the Cosmos textures/resources into the Public user directory, rather than the current user directory for this very reason. This is why Windows has Public to begin with.

I think there are some environment variables you can tweak, or you can create shortcuts (symlinks) in the file system. Or you can add paths to your Max scene file.

What we do is duplicate any resources used and put them into the project folder. We do this both to avoid the issues with paths, but also due to reports of resources being later removed from Cosmos (and deleted from users' drives by Cosmos) that you would no longer have access to should you ever need to edit the project. This is completely unacceptable. So copying the files into the project means you have a copy forever when you archive your project.

Why are you using backburner? Is it so you can batch render? Just wondering .

We use Deadline, but it's the same thing. Net rendering with a farm, or queuing jobs, etc.

I've always used backburner, so I can have things rendering one other pcs whilst im working on difference scenes. I work on several projects at the same time and so have to be able to render images and work at the same time. I've always used backburner and have rarely had any problems with it over the years, but I do appreciate it isnt supported anymore and there is possibly a better alternative out there now.
Allthough my question isnt related to backburner, and isnt a backburner issue, its a vray issue
          Thanks

does cosmos textures etc render fine through deadline? have you got it setup in a certain way for it to work? are the textured stored locally or on a server? i have tried both and neither seems to work for me
