  • Optimize Textures

I try to use 4K textures, but I am wondering if I need to go that high for my exterior renderings. Is there a script to make all my textures 2K?

I ran the script, it did its thing; however, my render node rendered lighter buckets. I'll have to try it again when I get a chance.

If you convert your textures to .tx or tiled EXR formats you really don't have to worry much about memory usage. I believe this utility will you convert them pretty easily, though I haven't used it in a while.

I have been converting to .tx using the V-Ray converter.

I actually own the Pixamoon script, so I'll give that a try.

That works too. Or Lele's script (for after the conversion).

                Where is Lele's script?

Sweet! I just spent about an hour sizing my large textures to 2K and converting everything to TX, and it looks like my rendering times are the same .

Oh, yeah, sorry, textures don't have a huge effect on render times unless you are actually running out of memory. Or they are particularly hi-contrast or something. Certainly blurring textures can reduce render times, if you actually WANT your textures blurred.

Setting the "Blur" setting to something much lower than the default of 1.0 can certainly increase render times (and I would argue looks like crap, but I know a lot of people do this, but a lot of people text and drive as well). You can go to like 0.5 or 0.7 or so if need be-- remember sharper usually takes longer to render... more contrast equals more samples.

My main PC has 128 GB of RAM, but my slave has 64 GB. I think part of the reason my slave doesn't join sometimes is lack of RAM.

Could be. Are you doing DR or rendering whole frame per machine? You can try setting DR to restart after each render (it's in the DR settings dialog where you select the nodes). This can cause a delay before you can render again, but can help with some nodes not being picked up all the time. I find DR to not be 100% reliable. It is pretty good, but with more complex scenes sometimes nodes need to be kicked.

I have it set to start over, but it still breaks sometimes. All the log says is that the node is busy.

Yes, I see this sometimes. Rather annoying. No clue what the cause is. I use Deadline to hold the nodes on DR. So I just restart the node on deadline. I am sure there are many other ways too.
