  • Frost glass material and Enviroment Map (Background)

    Hi guys,

I want the frost glass effect to appear on the background bitmap, which is inserted into the Environment map slot.
I know easiest way how to do is Photoshop, but I belive that does exist way how to reach with VRAY

    - In the scene is a in the Enviroment Map slot placed photo (bitmap)
    - In the scene is simple glass wall with Frost glass material (1)
    - The render does not show the expected blured effect (2)
    - If I place control box behind the glass wall, it does it work (3)

    Thanks for ideas

    Mira

Well I don't know exactly how env. background works or how it is positioned, but part of the frosted glass effect is that the further the objects is behind the glass the more blurred and less visible it becomes. So I'm not sure you'll get it to work like you want as every pixel in the photo is just as far away from the camera. What you can do is just map the photo on a plane with the same dimensions and put it behind the glass (Tip: Put the bitmap in a VrayLightMtl for extra control over the brightness.)

Hi, thanks for posting. I tested a default scene using our VRayMtl frosted glass pre-set and a hdri map in the environment tab.

I am not sure if this is you setup exactly.
If you can not figure it out on your own you could send your scene for review here or on the support contact form.

Thank you Vladimir for your quick response,
this setup good work with Spherical mapping type. But I need use Coordinates: Environ -> Screen Mapping.
Or do you have other recommendation?

You could workaround this by using a Camera Projection OSL node in the Environment slot instead of screen mapping. In the node's settings: select the camera you wish to project from; make sure the aspect matches the aspect ratio of the loaded image; "project on back" should be active. Note that you will get different results between IPR and Production, though. Also, the result might be a bit skewed, because of the camera lens effect, however, this way it's more realistic. Try it out.

            Thanks for the interesting advice.
I don't know much about OSL Maps. I tried it, but I have an error somewhere.
Could you please give me some more advice
            Thank you

Make sure the Color RGB component of the Camera projection node is plugged in the Environment slot. If you drag and drop it or browse for it, it defaults to the UVs. In other words, open the material editor and manually connect the Camera projection's Col (RGB) to the Environment slot.

Any reason why screen mapping doesn't work? I remember having similar problems for a different setup/outcome.

It's a 3ds Max thing, I can't really say. It doesn't work with Arnold as well.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you meant, but this setup works
