blackness on images

Any ideas what is going on here?

As far as I am aware, nothing major has changed, but today it is rendering like this. I am using Imap and LC for the calc process. Each light in the ceiling is a vray plane light and there is one in the long window.
LC: 1000 Subdivs.
Imap: Medium, 40/25 samples

I have seen similar when the wrong imaps are merged together, some from a certain scene and some not. Did you merge imaps for this one?

Nope - no merged maps. I am using DR though, but I have been using that for a while now and haven't seen this happen (even with this very same project/image)

Mmmm. I seem to have pinned it down to having 'Check sample visibility' turned ON.

I thought this function just cleaned up areas of joints or fine angles and things. Is this a bug?

It does not work very well for curved surfaces.

In this particular image, apart from the big curtain at the rear, there are no curved surfaces.
