  • License Server Q?

Is there a way to transfer the Vray license to a laptop when not using my workstation or whilst away from the network, in a similar way to transferring the 3ds max one?

I would never need to run them concurrently but it would be a great benefit if I was able to transfer the one from my workstation as and when I needed.

I thought I read somewhere that there will be a floating license server in Vray.

If you are away from your office, using your laptop you can access the license server, but you will an Internet connection and for the router/firewall to have the appropriate ports forwarded thru to the server machine.

The way you need to set this up is to forward port 30303 thru your firewall/router to the local IP of the server with the vrlserver on it.
And then in max on the laptop, tell vray to point to the external IP of your work connection.

If it says All licences are in use then you havnt setup the port forwarding properly. As it will give that same error if you try to render without having vrlserver open so basically it just cant contact vrlserver.exe

(Who knows you might have had your heart set on an early night)

ok just tried it and its a mixed bag.

The only way I could get the Vray server on the Lan to see an incoming connection from the laptop (via dial up) was by accessing the network through VPN and entering the Lan address of the Vray server not the external IP address of the gateway.

However although the Vray server was able to see the new connection from the laptop and quoted the correct IP address (Laptop External) and start time I always got the same message as THEOREM above. So either this isn't the correct port or the ports aren't being opened on the VPN/Firewall?

Early night....mmm not sure what that is

Ok, well that is the port i used and it worked just fine for me. I even tried locking in specific ports on the connecting machine but found the only one that works was 30303.
Maybe just maybe its s combination of having 30303 forwarded thru as well as some ports between 1000-3000 to allow the final connection to work.

I was able to connect to the vrlserver from an office that was running a linux server as the gateway and i had no external ports forwarded thru to my machine, and the connection with the vrlserver was running behind a netgear router and i just forwarded thru port 30303.
And i was able to connect without any problems what so ever.
You may want to check that the laptop is actually trying to connect via the correct IP.
                      C:\Program Files\Common Files\ChaosGroup\VRFLClient.ini
That is the location of the settings for vray to connect to the vrlserver, make sure that it has the external IP of your connection that has the vrlserver running and that the port is 30303.
Then double check that on your firewall/router you have port 30303 forwarded thru to the IP of the machine that is running vrlserver.

You should definitly NOT need to go thru VPN for it to work.
