  • transferring licenses....AKA, U got a new computer

    Hi all,
just wondering how you guys go about when its time to upgrade hardware.

I mean, MAX license transfer should be pretty straightforward (I hope).

    What about V-ray?
    Other plugins? Cebas?

When I upgraded some Cebas plugins, for example, I had to send an email to get a new author. number. Some plugins went into "grace" period, which works fine, but others need the new code...

So, what you do, you cannot work while you upgrade to a new PC?

Thanks for any insight, and tips/tricks you can share,

    regards

    gio

Did you buy Max/Vray from Ideate in San Francisco? If so, I have found them to be very helpful with this stuff.

Depending on what are the hardware changes you may not need a new authorization code. However, if you do need a new one, email us at vray@chaosgroup.com with the new authorization request.

        Upgrade

        Hi Vlado,

I am just going to change the motherboard on my system, will I need to request a new license or not.

Its important to know in order to time the change between jobs if I would need a new license.

        Thx

It depends on the particular case (e.g. if the motherboard includes a network card, if you decide to reinstall Windows etc). It would be best to assume the worst case (e.g. you will need a new license).

          Best regards,
          Vlado

I'm gonna take this opportunity and ask a somewhat related question. I bought Vray on my own but I currently use it only at my workplace. Although, I might get a PC myself next year or so and I'd like to be able to switch my license back and forth depending on where I'm working, in other words, can I use the Vray license as if it was portable and still on one computer at a time only?

            Thanks

Currently the answer is no, unless you can establish a connection to your current license server ie. over the internet, I suppose it would work if you served the license from a laptop and carried that back and forth. Not sure if it is still planned but Peter mentioned a dongle with 1.5 that would make moving the license possible.

The moving of licenses will require a special hardware dongle that you can carry anyway you wish, however you will need to pay an additional fee for the shipping and the dongle itself.

you will need to be able to log into work to use the liscence stored there. there was some talk about this on the forum recently
