  • Shadow Bias at 0

Hi. I was using a shadow bias of 0 for all my VrayLights for about 2 years or so. This was actually by accident when I was creating my templates, and I'm guessing it's because of a rounding error when using meters and a different decimal seperator. I've never actually encountered issues, or I never paid attention to it.

As the default is normally 0.02, I'm not sure which units this is supposed to be in, the documentation doesn't say anything about it. What are the implications when using the bias at 0? Will there be errors? Does it have an impact on rendering times?

Would be usefull to add this information to the documentation as for now the it is a bit meager.

    Thank you.
    A.

There was a post in which I think it was generally considered to be an old optimisation, so it isn't really necessary to use a value of anything but 0.0, as any potential overhead is negligible, yet the
accidental penalty for having it set to the default is that people are always asking why they have perceived errors with e.g. water meeting land.
I don't know whether that is mentioned in the docs but it should be

Ah, thank you. Would be good if the default is at 0 then!

Aaah now I vagely remember . Oops. Thanks!

In any case I was working on scenes (in meters) that span about 2km in size, with the bias at 0 and haven't had any noticeable problems.
