  • Animation flicker

    No, not *that* animation flicker.

I haven't done a whole lot of animation. I was playing around with my new camera and thought I'd try matchmoving it. I got a good match, but the rendered portion has a flicker. I know my source video isn't great (320x240 - 15fps - from a digital camera ), but that's not it.

I didn't precalc IR, because I have moving cars in the scene. I assume that is the problem with my lighting flicker. What is the correct way to go about this?

    hehe looks good!!.

To be honest the flickering to me looks like its co-planar faces. You dont by any chance have 2 copies of the model on the same spot do you?

How did you setup the camera matching... i would love to give it a go myself sometime.

      Hi!

Good matchmoving solution indeed, very stable... boujou, pftrack?
As far as "flicker" goes, i would say it´s Irradiance map settings...I guess they are too low, try it with medium animation or even high if u can afford it..
U still can precalculate the IM without the cars and then make everything matte and add the cars, to be composited in post...

Try to borrow a DV cam too if u dont own one, digital still cams are´t good at all when it comes to composition...video destroys after u add some basic color correction ... (i ve tried it too, so I know the pain )

      Hope it helps!

Oh, I knew the video would be next to worthless. I was just curious if I could still get a good track with lowres, low framerate, handheld, jerky, nasty video. I was just hoping to get a similar quality rendering.

And I know there aren't coplanar faces. But I do have low settings on about everything (IR+QMC, AA, etc...)

U still can precalculate the IM without the cars and then make everything matte and add the cars, to be composited in post...
I can certainly do that, but I was hoping to avoid the hassle. Is that what has to be done? Is that what Richard and the boys did on the Robin Hood ads for instance?

        Thanks.

(Oh, and it's a SynthEyes track.)

Just updated the AVI. Rerendered with better IR settings, everything else the same. How is it now?

Just had a quick look at the SynthEyes tracker http://www.ssontech.com/ - certainly cheaper than Boujou and Matchmover... anyone else know if this software is up to it? - anyone used it in production?

jonasa- Did you look thru their site? There are links to various television and movie projects it has been used on. Some big stuff. I think it's a great program. Can't beat the price. Has a bit of a learning curve. From what I'm told, it has the same capabilities as the big boys, just not necessarily laid out as well. Works for me though.

Jeez.... thats an impressive credit list. Gotta give this one a try.

Like your video, reminds me a bit of the Dassault commercial - from this thread http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpB...ic.php?t=12777

... hope you fix your flickering issue

That is great. the flicker isn't that bad and I think it is your IR settings. I'm doing an animation right now and am struggling with flicker but might be my materials. It seems to be more on bitmapped materials with some sort of pattern, and also brick /tile, and to a lesser extent geometry that is quite complex.

                          Again great job.

                          Regards Peter.

I think using saved maps for the base and QMC+LC for the animated objects and comping it is the best option but you might try QMC+LC for it all we discussed it a bit here http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpB...ic.php?t=12907

We use Syntheyes too and have gotten great results and at the price it is a real bargain.

personally i like icarus for matchmoving. simply because the version i have was the free version they used to put out a while back. still works nicely now as it did then. as for cameras. im really getting to love progressive scan cameras simply because i detest doing roto work on people when using interlacing. plus it takes the need to interlace in 3d out of the picture
