  • VRayLightMtl vs Vray Lights

    Hello,

I'm a Corona user, but was testing Vray to see about the speed possibly for animations. I created a scene that matches a Corona scene but noticed that it took so much longer to render and it was much noisier. I found the culprit to be VRayLightMtl. VRayLightMtl seems to kill the scene vs actual Vray lights. In Corona, Corona Light Material works exactly like Corona lights. Same speed and noise. Why is Vray having such issues with VRayLightMtl?

Mind if you send the test scenes so we can take a look?

From my experience you don't need a scene, it happens in every interior scene I tried that uses Vraylightmtl for lights instead of Vray lights. If you really need one I'll convert one of my Corona ones that I tried.

One is a plane with a lightMtl, the other an arealight, both rendered to convergence.

make sure your vrayLightMtls have direct illumination active:

Thank you Lele, I'm gone from the office for a week, so I didn't get a chance to put together the scene. But I'll put it together. I've tried three different scenes and all of them render way slower with V-Ray light material than using actual V-Ray lights, and much noisier also. I'll get a scene as an example to show.

That would be the case indeed if the lightMtl was left to only emit GI (i.e. with that option turned off).
Did you convert from Corona? That would then produce consistent results across scenes (i.e. all converted the same way.).
EDIT: i checked the converter code, and so long as the corona material was a light material, we enable direct lighting if it was enabled in the Corona one.
However, that won't work for corona materials with self illumination.

We'll have to wait for the scene to be sure.
