    What does this do? And why would I have it checked? See attachment.

    It coverts all your bitmaps to V-Ray's TX extension, which is handled better in V-Ray.

        it is like converting a jpeg to a png, but it converts it a TX.

            I did a test on my current project to see if I could shave some time. I didn't see any meaningful change but did notice it messed up the ForestPack shaders, rendering them much much lighter, so there's that to overcome also.
            Maybe it is faster in some scenes, but from what I can judge it's not a predictable thing, therefore not useful for me personally, based on said test, which in theory should have seen a great result.
