  • kitbash cargo model import, vray conversion

im testing some models downloaded from Kitbash, using their Cargo app to import directly to Max. on their help page it states vray is supported, but "you may need to use your renderer's conversion tools to get full compatibility"

the model imports as a single mesh with a big multisub material on it (56 materials on this one small model) . the materials within that are of the "standard surface" type.. something ive barely even heard of before.

needless to say the vray scene converter does not appear to convert them, and without conversion the model renders black. so thats very annoying. any tips?

Sounds like you might have the wrong format or the app is messing with it somehow. Which kit is it?

I've bought a couple of their kits recently and they all come as individual pieces, grouped where necessary and all with correct Vray mats.
Cargo app doesn't work (not updated as yet) with Max 25 so I downloaded it directly, so maybe you could try that route instead.

'standard surface' sounds like Maya's default materials.

ok this was one of those "shoolboy error" moments. you need to have Vray selected as your current renderer before importing. In my haste to test I opened max and imported, not realising i had Arnold active. with Vray active the models import nicely, with vray materials assigned.
