  • Animation and Walkthrough Settings

Hi all, although I'm new, I can already sense the anger many feel when new users post questions regarding flickering in animations, but this is slightly different. This being my first video rendered in VIZ with Vray, I started by using the same settings I had used to create some high-res stills my firm wanted for publications (just reduced the resolution really.) I went through the walkthrough tutorial and jumped into creating my multiframe incremental IR map and my walktrhough Light Cache files. The scene is simple (compared to some of the crazy stuff I've seen on this site the "viewer" begins in a corridor, then walk towards a door, the door opens as the handle rotates, and then the viewer enters the next room as the door finishes opening. Simply right? I knew not to bother rendering the animated part with the door using incremental or walkthrough settings, so i just rendered the frames that had no moving objects and saved the animation part for last. Now I don't know the best way to MATCH the frames using different GI techniques. Looking back, I should have posted this question BEFORE beginning to render, but oh well. And if this has been answered one million times before, then i sincerely apologize. Thanks.

Instead of using irradiance map, look at using QMC. Because of moving objects (animated textures or lighting also has this limitation) you have to do the GI calculations on a per-frame basis, rather than a saved solution. The trick of this, is finding settings that make frame to frame differences unnoticable, while not completely killing your render time.

Dynedain is right. When you have any type of objects moving in any way, pre rendered incremental irmap is useless. What you need is qmc /lc approach. LC needs to be rendered per frame though.

yeah, i started using qmc as first and keeping ligh cache as second (based on the animation tutorial,) but i was definately using the wrong GI settings because one frame took forEVER. is it at all worth keeping IR as my first GI calc and just changing it to the High Animation preset? I just don't have the time (or intelligence) to understand all the settings. Thanks for the advice though; there's a good chance i'll end up using qmc.

          settings i suggest would be:
          qmc - 15-20 bounces
          lc - samples screen 0.01, subdivs 800-1000, prefilter 30, filter fixed 0.4

Has anybody tried using the VRaySphereFade Atmospheric method that Vlado talked about in his "Rendering an animation with moving objects" tutorial? Its on the VRay docs tutorial section in the support section.

ive tried it, it gave some unusual results, and was not working in proper way. More to that is that it only works is spherical mode, no cube or cylinder nor can you stretch it and so on. So I didnt bother to use it furher more.

okay guys, i tried a few different approaches to the 140 or so frames i have left to render in the middle of my walkthrough/animation. since i can't post images here, i'm just going to show the link to my post in the VIZ forum where i have a couple of sample frames posted. i've read trhough about 15 threads on reducing/eliminating flickering, and all the settings i've tried lead to ridiculous render times (+16m???) AND extremely noisy images.

i'm hoping one of you who knows what you're doing will be able to see the image and know right away something i can do to improve the quality and render time, because i'm just wandering around in the proverbial dark here. thanks a lot for the advice so far and that to come.

wow, looks like your lc/irmap settings are way too low....

hey, actually, i think i tried some settings that you had suggested in another thread...you had suggested using QMC with 25 bounces and a few other settings that i tried to follow. there's much more complexity to the scene as the door opens, i'll post a frame that demonstrates this better. thanks.
