  • Flocking Birds

The flock of birds scene I posted earlier in the week appears to be hugely popular, but many people are struggling with the download, so I've updated it a bit.

    This file:

    http://rapidshare.de/files/6818949/flock.zip.html

should be unzipped into a single folder. It contains a Max 7 scene with a single bird in it animated flapping its wings and following a spline path. If you run the included script "flocking.ms", 50 copies of the bird will be created, each with slightly different paths which are based on the original but each with a slight randomness.

After running the script, I moved the morph target key frames on some of the birds so that they weren't flapping their wings in unison. It would be cool if a clever scripter out there could add this to the script file, but it's beyond me, I'm afraid (the flapping morph loops every 9 frames, btw).

I suggest you change the initial path to your needs, then by changing some of the values in the script you can create more or fewer birds or increase/decrease the randomness of the paths etc. There appears to be some anti-collision routine in the script too, which is pretty cool.

Running the script "as-is" and then moving some of the morph target keyframes on the bird copies produced this:

    enjoy!

Fantastic, thanks George! I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of animations with flocking birds from now on.....

I haven't been able to download any of the files. It always tells me I'm currently downloading a file. Which of course I'm not.

Could someone take pity on me and e-mail the bird file to me.

Is it just me? If I go to the link at rapidshare there is no file to download. Or do I completely miss the obvious?

when you click the link scroll down and click the FREE button then scroll down again and wait for the counter to hit ZERO then you have your download link.

Not that obvious... but not rocket science
