  • DR and precalc

This, I am sure, has been answered somewhere, but I've searched various strings and can't find a direct answer - this forum is getting big!

Q: Can I DR an IRmap/QMC solution for an animation, say every 10th frame, or must it go to ONE machine only?
    Kind Regards,

you can do it on multiple computers and merge the imaps together, but it will be faster doing it on a single computer.

OK - this would be because each machine would need to calculate 'its' first frame from scratch, yes?

However, why can't I DR the solution, using 10 machines to calculate the Irmap? After all, this is the way a single image is calculated using DR.
      Kind Regards,

Even though its not "supported" I often use 2 computers to precalc the IR map via backburber. It works fine. I did try with 6 computers once and it didn't work, so I would stick to 2 or 3 at the most.

I thought I read somewhere that 1.5 will be able to use DR in multiframe incremental mode, so that's good news!

Backburber? Is that a carpet plugin?

Has anyone verified if DR IRmap calculation is supported in the latest beta beta builds past 1.47?

As far as I know, it's because each machine is completely unaware of where the other machines have already sampled so you might end up with each machine pointlessly sampling areas that have already been covered by the other machines, whereas if one machine is doing all of the lc calculations, it knows where the samples from the previous frames are and won't keep putting effort into areas that are already adequately sampled.
