  • clipmap?

Since black in opacityslot does not render completely invisble (it becomes visible at intense lit area's) I am wondering why Vray does not support clipmaps. I searched the forum, but couldn't find a wish about clipmaps, which supprizes me with the large amount of people doing archviz. Or do you guys have a workaround. I read about the displacement trick, but they don't work on proxies, and it seems quite inefficient to create additional geometry (@rendertime) for this.

    Hi Gijs,

Have you tried turning off the fake highlights in the VRay material. I seem to remember from my scanline days having a similar problem with Max standard material. On a standard material you still get highlights where the material is totally transparent, I think the workaround was to copy the opacity map into the specular level slot as well.

i remember personally asking for clipmaps. only makes sense to me with a raytracer.

You can kind of bodge up your own clip map using vraydisplacement and its water level. So you displace by say 2 pixels and set the water level to 1 pixel, this will cut off all the mesh that isnt displaced and therefore clipping via you map

            DOH!!!

hahah thats what you get for skim reading a post while your tired.

Well another option is to boolean out the leaves by using max displace then a quick boolean or 2 then just use one leaf and replace the opacity mapped leaves.
So basically you would end up with a thin box or plane that is shaped just like your leaf.

              hi all

do you mean the problem like this?
the opacitymap is illuminated by the lights, this is wrong!

it would be great to get a map like clipmap, wich is only for cut out a map with an alpha channel.

              best regards
