  • shellac material fast/slow?

    I was just wondering if anyone knew of problems with this material in vray, and wether it was alot slower than a standard material.

    obviously, if it has two reflections, then it's obviously a bit slower, but I was wondering if it was exponentially slower, twice as slow, or just a little slower.

    Any experts out there know this one?

    The Shellac material is coded so that it contains 2 materials in itself.
    So, having 2 VRayMtls with reflections would cause V-Ray to trace twice the rays, which hit the object.

    If the <<Shellac Color Blend>> value is 0.0, then V-Ray will trace only once.
    Otherwise it will trace twice.

    Value = 0.0

    Value = 50.0

    Shellac material contains 2 VRayMtls with reflection.

    Consider that having 3x rendertimes, is not going to be always as it all depends on the scene itself.

      aside from being a bit slower (which is to be expected, as Nikki pointed out), I have never run into any problems using shellac materials. Infact I have even used multiple nested shellac materials, all with Vray materials inside with no problems.

        yeah...imo shellac is good, but blend mat is terrible for that. Never try to do blend between two refractive mats its a suicide.
