  • HDRI created with terragen

Has anyone had any luck with hdris created in terragen? They look great in HDRI Shop and in the mat editor, but when used for lighting...

I've had other HDRI's (namely Debevec's daylight sequence) do that as well. It appears to be from the probe having too much range, so the samples get to be too varied. I had some success in switching to QMC for my GI calcs, but ultimately what worked best for me was just using a different probe.

Also make sure you are using the right mapping type for the probe. If it's a cylidrical image, you should use HDRIshop to covert it to angular, then use the VRay HDRIMap to bring it into max.

I have the right maping type for the probe. Splutterfish's hdri loader gives much better results although the light is coming from the wrong direction and I can't seem to change it.

I ran into that problem with Debevec's sky probe. I believe it is due to a single, very bright spot (the sun) and too few samples. I got around it by using a smaller, blurred version for my skylight while sticking with the full res version for reflection and background.

For anyone interested I found that the vray hdri loader works with terragen hdris if you use the raw cubic hdri from cube2cross. Before I was converting the cubic hdris to spherical with hdrshop which seems to be the source of the problem.
