extreme zooms/perspective settings do this too.

Also, Max clips a scene both in the perspective and camera views after a certain size in units (whichever they might be).

Check in relation to your grid to see if you're doing things right (hide everything and see if the homegrid is visible at all, for small it might be)

Try pressing Z for zoom extents selected with everything hidden, then turn your objects back on, that should reset your views to a normal zoom.

As for the gizmo, the X key toggles it.

Siwtch to perspective view, still happens ?

Mine does it in user view in large project but not in perspective looks like Max 8 bug , never happened before..

can confirm it does only happen in user view, but it's not a max 8 bug as it's happened to me using viz2005 which has run for over a year without this particular issue...

As for the gizmo, the X key toggles it.

it's not the entire gizmo that disappears, just the x,y,z, letters from the ends of the handles...
