  • calibrating a monitor - linear workflow

How exactly do you "calibrate monitor with a hardware calibrator, selected a gamma of 2.2 and a whitepoint of 6500K"? I borrowed an "eye one display 2" and made an icc color profile. I have no idea where to go from here.

You should have software that walks you through the process of monitor calibration. In the software you should be able to choose gamma 2.2 and color temp of 6500K and then the software should go through some steps of reading the color from your monitor via the calibrator and then it will setup a profile of your monitor which you then make the default Monitor profile under the Color Management tab of your Display Properties - Advanced rollouts.

    Hope that helps!

i always found color temp of 6500k to be way to yellow and not right.
And found 9300k to look much more correct.
does 6500k and gamma 2.2 look similar to 9300k?

NO NO... 9300 is WAY off from what is correct. Way to blue. If 6500 looks to yellow, then your monitor is wrong.

Generally you would use 6500k for video and 5600k for film.

hmmm odd... cause every monitor i have had and used has been on 9300k. Even the one im using here at work. is on 9300k. if i change it to 6500k it makes most of the vray site yellow.

How does one overcome this problem?

ok, set the monitor to 6500k and then opened adobe gamma and calibrated it (i think ) and not it looks alot more like 9300k did.. well it looks way less yellow anyway.

and if i put the monitor back onto 9300k its really blue.

Get a Spyder, it works great on lcd's and crts. I have one of each and the displays are nearly identical to each other.

I had a Spyder basic and it had problems 'writing to the LUT.' The basic also didn't appear to give me options for multimonitors. And finally when I got it corrected on the main monitor, the end result turned the monitor very yellow. Perhaps the pro version works much better...

BTW... don't want to harp on this point, but Adobe Gamma is horrible. What makes it even worse, is that it is hard to uninstall, it is nearly malware IMHO. There are great hardware probes that are the best solution but can cost money. The best for the money that I have found, is WiziWYG (the free version). Use it on my laptop and workstation and it is great, low overhead, and simple.

You just remove it from your start menu. The file itself is probably 100k...

Adobe Gamma can be dissabled from loading with "Hijaack This". http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html

                              \windows start menu\programs\startup\adobe gamma loader\ and delete.
