  • DR 10 license question.

Are the 10 licenses for DR machine based or processor based? I ask as I was looking into getting one or more dual dual core systems for a render farm which seems that it will give me 4 procs per machine running the DR slave. So could you in theory set up 10 of these and get 40 buckets for the 10 licenses? Or are you limited to 10 buckets per license?

I currently have one dual proc sysetm, one hyper thread system (it shows as two procs) and two single proc systems. I get 6 buckets for 4 machines with 5 procs. So if I added one 2xdual=4ish proc system that should give me 10 buckets. Could I still add more machines since that would only be 5 machines running the DR slaves?

Also does anyone know how this would work with the 10 connection limit? Would you be able to have 40 buckets on 10 machines and still only use 10 connections? I don't know much about how the connections work in relation to machine vs software vs DR vs the world.

They are machine based as far as I know.
Your machine can have as many processors as you can afford

well its not 10 licenses but rather 10 dr nodes for 1 license. But in the other recent dr thread on this forum there was a discussion on why there is 10 node limit. I believe that its due to winxp 10 node limit connection. But cpu are not restricted not like in maxwell. So we have 10 dr nodes at work each are dual cpu so 20 cpus all together.

well the 10 limit can easily be gotten over (i mean the limit on xp. the 10 node limit on vray is also easy to get over...buy another liscence hehe)

          That is correct !
You may have 10 PC , each one dual CPU (20 cpus) and with 1 license it will be ok.

            so !
we can found many treads about the 10 dr limit nodes

            resume:
windows xp can't suport more than 10 conections
1 licence of vray support 10 render nodes (computer:in e. 2xeons or 2 opteron or maybe 10x quad opterons)

            in that configuration

            workstation
            : w2003 server with 20 cal
            vray: 2 licences
            render nodes: 20 wxp

can we expect that we can use 20 render nodes

as anyone test this Chaos maybe???

Our IT consultant said that you do not need extra CAL licences to allow for the renderfarm machines...

There isnt a connection limit if your manager runs on SERVER, the limit is on simultaneous connected user logins (for example: mail server). So if all render machines have a common login and password, this only uses 1 CAL licence.

Someone please confirm this (ive posted on the other thread as well) because not having to buy an extra 15 CAL licences will save heaps of cash!

Assuming you can have windows 2003 server with enough CAL's to cater for your staff members logins and the renderfarm login, you should be able to have unlimited farm connections and DR nodes....

If this is completely wrong please correct me!!!! (and ill blame the consultant)

                wait......

does that mean you can purchase one copy of server2003 and install it on as many machines as you want as long as they are all the same user???

We have server2003 with 10CAL lisences, but i don't even know what that means. I just purchased it so we can have more than 10 machines accessing it at once. That'd save me money on more rendernodes later though because I wouldn't have to buy an OS?
I've got to be reading that wrong. Someone please correct me so I know what's going on.

The OS powers the machine. You need 1 license of an OS for each machine.

CAL are Microsoft's scheme to milk more money out of their users. The way it works is that Microsoft says "Ok, buy WindowsXP for each of your workstations. Now, buy Win2003 Server for each of your servers. Now, if you have more than 10 computers or users, buy a 'Client Access License' for each user that needs to connect to each server."

It's a shady business practice, but MS has people over the barrel on this.

Yes, very machine still needs its own operating system

Dynedain do you know if what our IT consultant said is true?. because each farm machine is the same user, this only counts as 1 CAL licence

I guess Server can handle infinate connections from the same user (can be different machines) where running a manager on XP can only handle 10 connections full stop.

If anyone can clarify this that would help a lot !

It depends. There are two ways of handling CAL on any given server. You can have "Per User" or "Per Machine". Each server can utilize one of the two ways, but not both. And you can only swtich between the two ways once.
