    hey there,

    about to "turn on" the 3gb switch.

    this is what my boot.ini file looks like now:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    should i copy and past the last line as:

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /noexecute=optin /3GB

    or

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /3GB

    not sure if i should include /noexecute=optin / or leave it out??

    another thing, will this script give me the option on boot up to choose between the default or the 3gb setting?

      The 3 Gb switch works with my DELL Dimension 8300

      Here is my boot.ini

      [boot loader]
      timeout=30
      default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
      [operating systems]
      multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professionnel" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
      multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professionnel 3Gb Switch" /3GB

          It's just my boot.ini.

          By default it was this:
          [boot loader]
          timeout=30
          default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
          [operating systems]
          multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professionnel" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
          I just add the line for the 3 GB.

          But on a Dell you have always 2 partitions on the primary HDD (a little where Dell stores datas and the other for you) , this is why you have partition(2) and not partition(1) (but you can't see the first partition in windows.)

          Content que ça marche

            i've tried it on a dual opteron 265,win xp , 2g ram , azus k8n mobo and i got a lot of blck screens and then the system just crashed with a blue screen (didn't had this since win nt days).
            should i change just the /fastdetect into /3gb or should i change the whole sentence into - "Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /3GB

              Not sure, but it may not run at all. I have similar issue with some Athlon 64.
              The blue screen and it hangs.

                does that mean that if i want to add 2 more g to this system (4g total) i will not see any effect without the 3g switch on?

                  I was getting a lot of problems running the 3gb switch on the same board with opt 270's. It would occasionally not finish loading windows or would restart prior to finishing, not every time but pretty often. I added the "/USERVA=2800" switch to the boot.ini ( as dimo suggested too) and everything seems to be working fine now-no more black screens and reboots. Maybe it's just coincidence with something else but it's worth a try. For more info see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316739 and http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q319043. Hope it helps.

                      Yes, the renders finish now rather than hitting the 2gb limit and simply closing. As for the 2gb-->4gb upgrade, it should be faster because it doesn't need to swap out as much to the hard drive, hard to say though as I don't have 4gb in my systems.

                            Hi Guys,
                            Just a note on the 3GB Switch.

                            If you cant get the 3GB switch to work (some hardware configs dont like it) you can use an alternative.

                            instead of adding /3GB to you OS line in the boot.ini file use /USERVA = 3030 (or any other numeric value)

                            Let me know if you have any further questions

                              Do you need it for XP64?

                                Nope.

                                Thats pretty much the MAIN advantage of xp64..huge amounts of memory can be allocated to a single process

                                Ok, well a maximum of 4gb for a 32bit process and TB's for 64bit applications
