I just tried the 3GB switch yesterday and I noticed it working when I ran Photoshop, but Max crashes everytime I try to start it up. I disabled the switch and now Max runs great. Weird.

      Hi all
      We tried the 3GB switch on our AMD 2.44x2 + 4GoRam + 7800GTX.
The display paramaters crashed : no dual screens, 800x600...
So we put a line with a 4GB switch, works fine.
      Looking for 50GB switch testers...

After last update of the graphic card, 3GB ran fine.

With the 4GB switch, it crashes at 1.5GB Memory used.
With 3GB, we go through 2.3GB...

Just while we are on the subject of it causing issues,
my Belkin Flip KVM switch will not work (on one of the two pc's it toggles between) if I boot into the 3GB mode, which is a bit of a bummer

anyone know of a work around other than the standard boot?

          Ta,
          Tom

Is anybody else getting BSOD when running Max 9 with the /3GB switch enabled and the Direct3D viewport driver? My Max runs fine, but as soon as I try to play back any video file with these settings I get an instant blue screen of death.

              not as yet.

I run the /3gb switch all the time now, otherwise supreme commander crashes in large matches..

Guys I have an interesting question about 3Gb switch. Is it possible to run a 3gb switch on new macs that run with winxp? Technically I dont see why not. But just before we go and do something we will regret, I want to ask here.
                Thanks!

yeah its all dependant on the hardware. So I would assume if its working on CJ's macs it would work on yours.

And as long as you edit the boot.ini properly so you have 2 lines so that on startup you can choose either to go with or without the /3gb switch then your not going to get stuck at all.

                        hello everybody.

Does the switch also work on xp home edition???? There is no difference in render time. And what i understand from the microsoft site that it only works on Xp profesional and windows 2000 server.

                        Thanks.

Im not sure if it works under home edition to be honest. Although after a quick google it looks like it might well work.
You wont notice a render time difference either. It just allows max to use up to 3gb memory instead of just below 2gb.
So I guess if you were running out of ram there might be a difference but generally not.

thanks Daforce i wasn't running out of ram but i just installed the 3gb switch because i thought it made it render faster. O well now i don't have to beat up the shop owner who adviced me to take the home edition instead of the profesional

Ahh right, nah doesnt affect the speed. Just the available ram. Without it, there isnt much point in having more than 2GB or ram.

The only significant drawback with XP home, is that you can only have 1 cpu. So no dual cpu setups. You can still have a single quad core cpu tho.

With vista you no longer have a boot.ini file now.... anybody have clues as to how to do the switch?
