I'm curious if anyone knows if Viz 2007 is going to work well with Vray. I'm still using Viz 5 because of so many problems I had with 2006. If anyone has any inside knowledge, or any knowledge at all, or even some pretty good guesses, please respond.

I just got off the phone with a Discreet rep. I was trying to figure out if Viz 2007 will work under Windows Server 2003. He said that it doesn't, officially.

My question to you guys on the forum is this: If Viz can't run on Server 2003, how do you get around the 10 connection limit of Xp Pro? I've read the posts about the registry hack but my company protocol won't allow it.

We switch (a week ago) some of or files (textures) to linux and it is much much better than before. Our win2k3 server appears slower even being a faster machine than our linux server, and connection limit is no more.

Was the linux server easy to setup? Did you have to install additional network software or did your windows machines connect easily?

I've had absolutely no problems with 2006 and Vray, but you have to use Vray 1.46.15.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I can't switch to Linux. But its good to know there is an option if I can convince our entrenched IT dept. to step out on a limb.

Surely, there are people who use Windows OS and have more than 10 render connections. How are you set up?

depends on what distribution you use
i got samba working fine in one or two days with little prior linux knowledge (there is a bit of config file editing involved for setting the user rights inside samba, especially if different users are supposed to have different permissions)
btw: samba comes with most linux distributions and often can be configured using graphical interfaces
i just didnt like the way my distribution handled the installation paths and config - thats why i compiled and installed it on my own
compiling it youself takes a bit of effort but it allows you to only include the functionlality you really need (i didnt want printer sharing f.e.)

samba uses the exact same file sharing protocol as windows (they took the microsoft documentation of it and rewrote it for linux)
you wont need any client software unless you still use win98
from the network it looks like a windows file server/share
if you want to you can even use it as a domain server

i'd suggest trying to stick to the latest stable samba build - the versions that get bundled with the distributions are often quite old
                www.samba.org
                latest stable: 3.0.21c

if you haven't got any linux knowledge i suggest you find someone who does - i can be a intimidating thing in the beginning

ps: in our case samba was running on an old athlon xp 1700+ with 512 Megs of ram
that's more than enough for linux
