  • Onyx trees

I am going to purchase a tree generator. I am 90% sure I will go with the new onyx plugin. This seems a step above xfrog at least with it's vray compatability. Are their any issues with it I need to be aware of?
    Feedback comments on Onxy?

    Thanks

I was thinking about that plugin, too, but I don't like the fact that they don't have a demo available...for all that money. I mean, even a $30 utility have a demo or a trial at least.

I e-mailed them and asked about a demo and they sent me a link. They don't have a demo of the actual treestorm plugin, but at least you can demo the four individual modelers (broadleaf, conifer, bamboo and flower).

The only issue we had was poly counts. They are high if you want a full looking tree. Proxy is a MUST. Also, don't use the maps that come with the trees as they rely on opacity. Make a procedural shader for the leaves instead-it renders much faster.

Also, don't get discouraged at the modeler's tools. They are a little clunky and it's hard at first to get a tree to look exactly like you want. Just stick with it and you'll get it in no time. Read the PDF file that comes with it. It helps a lot.

      Good luck!

there are no problems with onyx and vray. There is a tool floating around to replace opacity mapped leaves with geometry somewhere.

The Treestorm plugin requires a fair bit of memory to compute what the tree is doing next, so be aware of that. In larger scenes it can cause problems

I dunno if anyone used Bryce, but I wish someone would port their treemaker to be a plugin of some sort for max. The interface is simply beautiful and it's very easy to use. Of course it's no use cuz I can't even export the tree model. Oh well...

Hmm... I guess they didn't like me because I got an email from them about a week ago saying they do not have a demo.

did you ask for a demo of treestorm or the tree maker?
