    I thought you could simply put a displacement map in the displacement slot. But I recently read a tutorial which said to apply a displacement modifier on top of a mesh smooth (with zero iterations) and add the map there.

    Would anyone like to explain the difference and pros and cons etc.

    You can use both methods, but keep in mind that if you use a map in the displacement slot of a material, you don't have much control over the actual amount of the displacement. It is based on the object bounding box, and may look weird for animated meshes. The VRayDisplacementMod modifier, on the other hand, allows for better control of the displacement.
