Well - one is cheaper than the other. The opterons will give you a very slight speed advantage at the cost of burning a hole in your wallet. Most people don't think it's worth the extra cost.

If you're looking to realistically go the rackmount way, then 1U and 2U opteron boards are the only way to go. 4Us which can fit a regular Athlon but take up 4 spaces on a rack.

DOnt go the 4800.. the slight speed increase isnt worth the huge cost increase.. get 3800's and atleast 2GB of ram.

Would have been standard everything except for a slimline heatsink i reckon.

We have a bunch of p3's here at work in 2U's just standard components that you would put in a case.

Its the 1U's that would be interesting to fit X2's into. Actually we have a Dual p4 2.8ghz Xeon Dell 1U rackmount server as well. Thats pretty neat.

I don't have the spec here, but it was pretty standard fare, regular nforce MB with onboard video. Not sure what the cooling is but it seems to do the job since they have been running at 100% for a few months now.
