  • Cars Glittery car paint style

Hi All sure you have seen the new cars film prom pixar http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/cars/

I was just wondering how to make a material like the red car paint used in the title towards the end of the above clip the section with the retro cars logo and the glittery speckals.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    Si

Yeah I shall have a play, does it create that glitter effect when the object moves?

You can do it with falloffs and noises like the brazil car paint material but since it's flakey, you can get problems with it sparkling when it animates - the only way to remove the sparkling is to higher the aa which basically gets rid of the sparkles and then there was no point using it in the first place. Film is okay since you don't have any issues with pixel creep but for broadcast I wouldnt really bother.

I use two methods for car paint, one with Shellac, another with Blend. With the blend material I use a perpendicular/parallel falloff blending between a non-glossy reflective Vray material, and a glossy one. I've found both examples posted on this forum at various times.

I have found that it's easier to render a matte of the sparkle (a 'sparkle pass' shall we say?) then add the sparkles in comp. double sizeing the sparkle pass takes care of any buzzing or noise.
