  • Mapping Circular Images on NURBS

    Hi,

This post isn't specific to VRay, but this forum generally seems the most helpful, so I hope no-one minds me posting it here.

Basically, I've got a building that I've modelled in NURBS in Rhino, and imported into Max using Powertranslators.
I need to map some circular images on to the ceiling, so that they follow the contours of the surface, as if they were big circular bits of wallpaper.

On the whole, this seems to be working, except in one place where two surfaces meet, and I need to have half a circle on each.

    I'm getting the following result:

I think one half is fine, but I think the other should be doing this (red line):

It's important that I get this as accurate as possible, which it obviously isn't at the moment. And I don't want to have to warp the images to compensate for the mistakes with the mapping.
Has anyone got any reccomendations as to how to get a bit closer to the desired result? I've been stuck with this for quite a while now, and don't have very much longer to sort it out. Any help would be much appreciated.

Here's a better picture of the ceiling in case it's hard to get an idea of the shape from the images above:

    Cheers,

    John

iv had similar problems to this in the past...Due to time constraints Iv often just added an edit mesh modifier and textured the object from there.

not helpfull if you want to keep it nurbs though

      Thanks Mat,

      Hope you're well mate.

To be honest, I'm not too bothered whether it ends up as nurbs or polys, as long as it looks right in the end.

I wouldn't consider myself an expert on UV mapping though. Would it just be a case of unwrapping it with texporter and scaling and rotating the map in Photoshop until it fits? Or am I going to have to read up on Pelt Mapping and stuff, because I've never really ventured there before?

      Cheers,

yes m8, im cool, super busy though

As for mapping...if it was polys (or nurbs with poly modifier) I personaly would find it easyer to map...I probably wouldnt even worry to much about unwraping/pelt and stuff, but do most of my mapping using simple plainer projection mapping. But I suppose it realy depends on what you want to map.

Good luck anyway...whats the building , I think you did tell me.?

It's the Chapterhouse at Worcester Cathedral. Made a model of it many moons ago, and now I've got to cover the roof in religious imagery as it was circa 1100AD.

I'm glad MDI's going well. The website looks awesome.

          Anyway, back to the question...

Wouldn't planar mapping on a surface that isn't flat also cause the image to look warped? I tried using a rotated cylindrical uv map but it came out a bit strange.
I suppose unwrapping's probably the way to go. I've just got 40 of them to do, so I don't really fancy it!

          Cheers,
